Overwatch Season 13

Lock and load as your favorite dueling heroes in our newest Competitive Play mode: Team Deathmatch! This 4v4 format pits players against each other in a battle for survival—first team to 30 points wins the match. Group up with your friends or get matched with similarly-skilled players to climb tiers and earn rewards. The three-week season is already underway so be sure to play before time runs out!

Overwatch Season 11

Players must have Blizzard SMS Protect enabled on their account while completing a minimum of 50 matches in a region to be eligible for the Top 500 (PC only).

Overwatch Season 10
Rialto will be released on May 3, soon after Season 10 begins. However, the map will not be available in the Competitive Play rotation until a future patch. This will help provide the community with plenty of time to learn how to play with the new map.

Overwatch Season 9
We are proud to announce our newest Assault/Escort map—Blizzard World—is now available in Competitive Play. This theme park brings the magic of Blizzard’s many worlds into one place so your most epic memories can come to life as you attack and defend the payload across Azeroth, Tristram, and the Koprulu Sector.

Overwatch Season 8
The maximum Skill Rating difference between the highest and the lowest skill rated player has been reduced. The ranges have been changed to the following:
1000 SR for Bronze through Diamond, 500 SR for Master, 250 SR for Grandmaster.

Personal performance Skill Rating adjustments for Diamond-tier players and above have been removed. Previously, Skill Rating gained or lost in these tiers was calculated in part by how well you performed during a match.

Overwatch SEASON 7
Season 7 for Overwatch is coming close to an end. Season 7 is using the same season model as before. That means that before you can kick off your competitive career, every player must first level up to LVL25 and complete 10 placement matches to obtain their initial skill rating. This rating will be a number between 1 and 5000, with higher values indicating a greater skill level. Players will also be assigned a tier based on their rating – Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, or Grandmaster – and climbing into the next tier is possible as you improve.
Competitive rewards have stayed the same throughout the years. Anyone who completes their placement matches during a season will receive a special spray and player icon. If you are placed within the Top 500 players on your platform (and in your region) at the end of the season, you’ll receive an extra player icon and animated spray.

SEASON 6
One of the most notable changes introduced in Season 6 for Overwatch is the fact that the length of Competitive Play seasons has been reduced from three months to two months. Due to the shortened season length, fewer Competitive Points will be rewarded at the end of each season. On the flip side, more Competitive Points will be rewarded for wins or ties in Competitive Play. Players will now receive 15 Competitive Points for a win (formerly 10) and 5 Competitive Points for a tie (formerly 3). One more big change is that Control maps will now be decided based on a best-2-out-of-3 series (formerly 3-out-of-5).

SEASON 5
Season 5 for Overwatch brought zero changes.

SEASON 4
Back in Season 2, they introduced a skill rating decay system. This change required players in the Diamond, Master, and Grandmaster tiers to complete at least one competitive match every seven days in order to maintain their status. For season 4, players with a skill rating above 3000 would have to complete at least seven games per week. There has also been a big change regarding the Top 500 leaderboard. Previously, any player who managed to break into the top 500 at any point throughout the season would receive a special spray and player icon at the end of the season. Starting with season 4 these rewards would only be granted if the player is in the top 500 leaderboards at the end of the season.

SEASON 3
At the end of Season 2 they introduced a new mode. They created a new 7 day Off-Season mode, which allowed players to continue using the Competitive Play ruleset without their skill rating being affected.
After giving the Skill Rating system a major overhaul in Season 2, they noticed that both the Gold and Platinum tiers were significantly overpopulated.
To address these issues, they've made some slight adjustments to the Skill Rating system. As a result, skill ratings should be more widely distributed across all tiers during Season 3.

SEASON 2
In Season 2 for Overwatch they have retooled the skill rating system. Instead of measuring player ratings on a 100-point scale, skill ratings now range from 1 to 5000. This expanded scale should give players more detail about how their skill rating changes on a game-by-game basis.
They have also implemented the skill rating decay. Players with a skill rating above 3000 will need to stay active in order to maintain their status. If they aren’t able to complete at least one competitive match every 7 days, they will lose 50 points from their skill rating for every 24 hours they’re out of the action.
In Season 2 the skill tiers have been introduced. On the picture above you can see, depending on their skill rating, players will fall into one of these tiers.
They have also updated the Competitive Point system. In season 2, players received 10 points for winning a game. The cost of Golden Weapons was also multiplied by 10, meaning that golden weapons price is 3,000 Competitive Points instead of 300.
They also added a 10-minute penalty for any players who leave an in-progress match, and starting in season 2, players will need to complete more matches without leaving before their account is returned to good standing.

SEASON 1
Competitive Play is locked until you hit level 25. Once you reach level 25, the mode will become available via the “Play” button in the main menu.
In Season 1 they introduced the skill rating. Every new player must first complete 10 placement matches in order to obtain their initial skill rating. This rating was a number between 1 and 100, with higher values indicating a greater skill level.
Also in Season 1 of Overwatch the rewards have been introduced. Anyone who completes their placement matches during a season will receive a special spray and player icon. If you are placed within the Top 500 players on your platform (and in your region) at the end of the season, you’ll receive an extra player icon and animated spray.

Every competitive season of Overwatch has had the same rewards system from the start. Players are rewarded with a seasonal Spray and Player Icon to mark their participation. Given that no changes to the reward system have been announced, we're going to assume that this is the case for Season 10 as well if you want to know when the new season 11 starts & ends check our topic. To qualify for rewards, we have a few important things to note here:

  • You need to complete your 10 Placement Matches in order to qualify for these rewards.
  • The rewards will be added to your account at the end of the season in question – not after completing your placements.
  • Only those players who hit the Top 500 in any given season have previously qualified for the special animated Spray. Expect the same limitation this time around.
